X1X has 6 teraflops on the GCN architecture. 12 teraflops if Xbox Series X is twice as powerful. The point is, teraflops on different architectures are different. 12 teraflops in RDNA(Navi GPU's) would be way more powerful than 12 teraflops on GCN. For example, RX Vega 64 hits over 12.5 teraflops pretty easily, meanwhile RX 5700 XT that uses a new architecture can reach 11 teraflops with an extreme overclock, but it shows way better results than the 64. Meanwhile, 6 teraflops in GCN is also different from Nvidia architectures such as Pascal and Turing. Rx 580 is about 6.1 teraflops on the pretty much latest version of GCN, the same as X1X, and it's a mid range 2017 GPU. If the GPU in the new Xbox is really over twice as powerful as Xbox One X, it's still really not that impressive and will most likely deliver high end 2017 level results. Of course they most likely will improve the performance with better optimized technology, but we already have mid range graphics cards made on the new RDNA architecture, that can surpass the Vega 64 with lower TDP's and temperatures.
ReplyDeleteIf it's CPU is 4 times as powerful, it will be a huge leap, but compared to PC processors it's nit that special. Xbox One X CPU has 8 cores and 16 threads, but only 2.3GHz clock speed, and no L3 cache, which made it even less powerful that AMD FX 8320, which had half the threads. The performance boost is most likely related to new RAM, L3 Cache, and obviously higher clocks. GDDR5 in Xbox One X divides its bandwidth between GPU and CPU, since it's an APU, giving the CPU bandwidth comparable to Dual Channel DDR3 at about 1800MHz because it is basically controlled by the CPU Clock speeds, which is extremely low. GDDR6 should give a pretty good boost and L3 cache will increase it even more, and of course the higher clocks.
I'd say that it will be about as powerful as mid range 2020 PCs, which is already an upgrade from current Gen, since Xbox One pretty much had 2011 mid range GPU, and a really crappy CPU.
Before consoles were really a joke, with a lot of fanboys being all pathetic, saying that the specs don't matter, but this time, they're an actual competition.

ReplyDeleteI dont like the idea of cloud gaming. Its harkening back to the days of the arcades where you have to keep putting money in to play. One of the pros of both pc and console gaming is that you owned the game and did not have to put out more money to keep playing. Epic fail.
