Why has the Sony PlayStation 3 been so difficult to develop games? | MVG

A deep dive into the Cell BE processor on the Sony PlayStation 3 console, and why the developers did not like to develop games for the system despite its powerful architecture.

  1. What about games from sony computer entertainment like GOW or MGS? They should presumably be the most efficient on playstation.

  2. Gabe newel only said it was difficult because it has a 3

  3. I’ve never understood computer science and how to read code.

  4. in fact, the real issue is that those game developers are bad programmers.
they still can't seem to figure out multithreaded code in PC games...

  7. SPEs of the Cell Processor is hard to program for.

  8. PS3 was amazing at some wierd machine learning workloads with the Linux toolkit sony provided for some time.
Also I feel like sony fucked up by leaving developers to port their engines from the ground up to the Cell arch instead of providing some sane framework. Oh well.

  9. This sucks considering that the Net Yaroze, a special edition PlayStation 1 system, was really EASY to develop games for. Cadiccarus has one

  10. This was like 16 wheeler vs 4 wheel AWD pickup truck. Both have different use cases and the overhead of running a 16 wheeler to transport a washer/dryer to your house is much higher and better done with a pickup truck.

  11. I love how this dude breaks down no difference between the 360 and ps3 overall ... yet everyone says the ps3 was far superior its like telling everyone the world is round and yet refuse to believe it this is maddening

The PS3 was great if you were a Sony-owned studio. Not so much if you were a multiplatform 3rd-party developer.

  14. But which one red ringed and basically bricked itself over and over again? ;)

  15. Don't blame yourself for changing the architecture that's standard across other platforms; blame the developers for having reasonable expectations. lol.

  16. I love PS3 today . I remember developers calling Ps3 a alien hardware back in 2007 :)

  17. Because the ps2 was wildly successful and they thought that making the ps3 difficult to develop for would take time away from devs, so that they wouldn’t develop Xbox 360 ports in time, but in the end, the opposite happened with most devs preferring to develop for the Xbox

  18. 7:23 this is false. Hardware interfacing, or context setup code, is usually hidden from application developers. They use wrappers and APIs that perform macro operations, such as initialization. They wouldn't even need to call an "init()" function. If anyone complained about complexity, then I'm sure its was much more than just some threading, event queue stuff that needed to be taken care of

  20. example you've shown is non-sense

  21. - Gabe Newel: the PS3 is a complex garbage shit.
    - Naughty Dog: Hold my devs.
    - Santa Monica: I understand why you haven't released Half Life 3 yet, your devs aren't talented enough...
    :D :D :D

  22. The Dualshock 3 was trash, it broke in weeks and had a "sweaty" texture.

  23. That's why pc gaming is simply the best.
